The Notebook
The whole film tells a story of love, distance and memories.
In a nursing home, an old man tells his wife, who has lost her memory, the stories in his notebooks over and over again. Ellie, the daughter of a wealthy family, meets Noah, a poor boy with no money but a happy life, in a fantastic playground. Ellie learns freedom and happiness from him, and the two soon fall in love. But the lovers are forced apart because of the disapproval of Ellie’s parents. After the separation, Noah wrote to Ellie every day, but was secretly hidden by Ellie’s mother. Ellie finally gave up waiting after seven years of agonising waiting. The day before she was due to enter the church, she suddenly saw in the newspaper the white house Noah had promised to build for her …… The two meet again and eventually come together.
“The best love is the kind that awakens the soul, and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts, and brings peace to our minds. And that’s what you’ve given me.That’s what I’d hoped to give to you forever. I’ll be seeing you.” This is one of my favourite lines of dialogue.
True love should be free, not about money, status or identity, but being together and being apart. Noah and Ellie’s relationship was like that, seemingly the cheesiest encounter between a rich girl and a poor carpenter who may have always disagreed and always argued, but they could be sure that they had always loved each other deeply. Noah says that he is an ordinary man and that the most extraordinary thing he can do is to love someone deeply for the rest of his life and that love can work miracles, facing old age and death hand in hand. This is what makes Lovestruck so fascinating. The film’s interpretation of romance is writing a love letter to each other every day, 365 days a year. It’s waiting 7 years for 1 person to build an imaginary house for her. It is also about staying together for a lifetime, never leaving each other, even when illness and forgetfulness cannot separate two hearts.
The Notebook is the old school romance film of defying the odds and desperately trying to stay together.
