ANALYSIS TWO FILMS

Analysis My Father and Mother (1999)
Colour: Firstly, colour has the effect of dividing time and space. The film opens with black and white colours to depict reality, while colour is used to depict memories, dividing time and space, and also has a contrasting intention. The reality of the death of the father, the use of black and white to express the depression, sadness, and the use of bright colours to show the beauty of parental love, expressing the beauty and splendour of this time, sad and cold; colourful memories like oil paintings, gorgeous and warm. It pursues a kind of effect of using the picture to speak and to show the meaning of the picture. Secondly, colour has the effect of portraying the psyche. The role of shaping the image. The use of red is unique, as it represents love, passion and persistence. The film uses the colour red as a symbol of the passionate relationship between the father and the mother. Whenever the mother is running along the rugged mountain road, she is always adorned with a red scarf, a red cotton jacket and a red hairpin, which, in form, is conducive to a better aesthetic experience for the viewer; in content, it has a symbolic meaning that is highlighted, while the colour red also exudes the image of the mother’s youth, her dedication to love and her reckless vigour.
The film often uses bright warm yellow to capture the mother and father, not only highlighting the mother’s delicate beauty when she was young, but also secondarily rendering the beautiful love between them and the warm atmosphere between them. When shooting the natural scenery, it is mostly in the early morning, and at dusk, it is the warm yellow light of the sun that envelops the nature, making the picture dense with a sense of warmth and beauty.

Analysis City of Love(2016)
The costumes of the male protagonists in the film are usually shirts and suits in black, white and grey, with ties in other colours, from style to colour. However, the female protagonist, Mia, is different in that she is quite individual in terms of the colour and style of her clothes. For example, the bright yellow dress of the female lead appears, and the bright colour means that the relationship between them is heating up quickly at this party. Later on in the relationship, Mia is mostly seen in warm, youthful dresses, such as those seen in the shredded date sequence: pinks, lavenders and light florals, to name a few. These warm, romantic colours or patterns match the mentality of Mia in love, visually creating a happy little girl in love. In addition, Mia’s career sequences are dominated by black and white grey suits and shirts, which are crisp and simple, in contrast to her life in love. Not only are the colours used in the costumes highly saturated, but the lighting scenes are also bold and intense. It is as if the entire canvas is filled with artistic colour. For example, when Mia returns home from a frustrated audition and takes a shower, she wipes her hands on the mirror, filling the frame with rosy light and shadows, romantic and dreamy, as the defeated Mia looks at herself in the mirror and tries to smile. When the heroine attends various actor auditions in a quick cut scene, three separate sets of shots show the heroine’s clothes and the background in a strong complementary colour scheme, presenting the heroine’s current state of extreme instability in both her life and work. The use of large areas of colour and light and shadow in the film is impressive. In the classic hilltop dance together phase. The time lingers just as the sun is setting, with blues and purples interspersed with orange and pink, and large blocks of darker colour that set an ambiguous and romantic mood. During the period when the hero and heroine fall in love, many of the scenes are covered in pure colours of light and shade, and the romantic and dreamy shades of rose and pink-purple in the home of the two men, the picture is full of passionate love. The use of empty shots of the sky and buildings in blue tones is used extensively to create a sense of tranquillity in the city of dreams.
